The Science of Jet Lag

We started Flightmode Labs after realizing most jet lag advice online is confusing, outdated, or just wrong. Our mission is simple: use honest science to help elevate your travel experience

What Causes Jet Lag?

When we travel across time zones, our sleep hormones, and basically every other function of our body are still running on our old timezone. That’s because they’re all controlled by our brain's internal 24-hour clock, our circadian rhythm. So when we land somewhere new, that clock is still synced to the place we came from, which is why everything feels “off” until it adjusts.

Jet Lag Symptoms

Nearly everyone feels jet lag much the same. The symptoms experienced are similar to those in sleep deprivation, though many of the symptoms can be exaggerated by the number of time zones crossed, and the direction of travel

Trouble Sleeping

Defeat Jet Lag

The best way to defeat jet lag Is to never get It in the first place. Preparing your body before your flight and supplementing it with Flightmode can stop jet lag before it starts.

Step 1: Sleep Schedule

Start adjusting your sleep schedule a week before your flight. When traveling Eastwards, go to sleep and wake up an hour earlier than you did the day before. When traveling Westwards, wake up an hour later and go to sleep an hour later every day.

Step 2: Flight Planning

Picking the correct flight is key to a comfortable trip. You want to aim to get to your destination as late in the afternoon as possible. This allows you to get sun, eat, and sleep without needing much endurance.

Step 3: Diet

After light exposure, food timing is your body's next way to regulate its sleep schedule. On the day of travel you want to eat in the morning, and then fast till arrival at your destination. Who like airplane food anyways? This 12hr+ fast helps your body reset to your destination.

Natural Remedies for Jet Lag

Taking certain herbs and vitamins during key parts of your day can help you get over jet lag very quickly. Infact, the entire concept behind Flightmode Lab's Jet Lag Remedy is based around this concept. We developed a sleep formula using herbs like chamomile and valerian root to make a rough nap feel like a night in bed. We also developed a wake formula which combines Caffeine with L-theanine to provide jitter free energy. Below we share our exact formula and reasoning, openly and for FREE.

  • Chamomile Extract

Binds to GABA receptors in the brain to promote calm and reduce sleep latency, helping your body shift into deeper sleep more easily.

  • Valerian Root

Helps quiet the nervous system and improve sleep quality, making it easier for your body to reset its internal clock.

  • Pine Bark Extract

Improves circulation and reduce inflammation and fluid retention, helping your body recover faster from jet lag related bloating

  • Magnesium

Calms the nervous system and regulates natural melatonin production, helping you fall asleep faster, even in chaotic enviroments.

  • Vitamin C

Helps reduce oxidative stress from long flights and supports immune function, which makes it easier for your body to recover from travel stress.

    • Guarana + Theanine

Delivers natural jitter free energy by increasing alpha-wave activity in the brain. About 100mg of caffiene.

    • Vitamin B12

Supports cellular energy production and helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle through its role in methylation

    • Lion's Mane

Promotes nerve growth factor (NGF) and supports brain function, improving focus, cognition, and mental clarity

    • Vitamin D

Plays a key role in circadian rhythm regulation and serotonin production, helping your body anchor to daylight cues and adjust more quickly.

    • NAC

Boosts glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant, reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, and brain fog from long flights

      Blue Light = Evil

Blue light from screens like phones, TVs, and LED bulbs is harmful to your sleep health. Blue light exposure at night makes your body think it is still daytime, which throws off your circadian rhythm, making it harder to adjust to a new time zone. We decided to pair every Flightmode Kit with blue light blocking glasses. Wearing these before bed-time stops harmful blue light and can help you get faster jet lag relief.
